Comments

Normally Shri Yantra is made of precious metals like gold or silver. It is also made of copper, gems and sphatika.

Comments

When we say ‘type’ it needs to be understood here that among the various classification schemes of Shri chakra, the below one, probably the most popular, is based on prastAra-bheda.

The following classification scheme applies to the simplest and the most popular of the 4032 versions of shri chakra, called the shuddha-chakra. This is the chakra composed of four shiva-chakras and five shakti-chakras, with the shakti-Yantra extending from bindu to manvasra and the rest upto the bhUgrha representing the shiva-chakra. This is the same shri chakra the uddhAra of which is done by AchArya bhagavatpAda in saundaryalaharI (chaturbhiH shrIkaNThaiH) and in kAdimata (bindutrikoNsamyuktam vasukoNasamanvitam etc.)

Such a ShrI Yantra, known as shuddhachakra, has three prastAra bhedas:

1. BhU-prastAra
2. KailAsa-prastAra
3. Meru-prastAra

BhU prastAra is of two kinds: 1. pAtAla 2. Urdhva

KailAsa prastAra is of two kinds: 1. Ardha kailAsa 2. PUrNa kailAsa

Meru prastAra is of two kinds: 1. Ardha meru 2. PUrNa meru

Each of these six types, based on bIjalekhana krama, can be srishti, sthiti or samhAra. Thus, there are eighteen varieties of shrIchakra. There are other classifications, like the more physical ten-fold classification into bhadra, mohana, vaijayanta, nandana, mahAchakra etc. or the sixteen fold one such as amrtavajra, padmagarbha etc.

Comments

In yonder days, Shri Chakra was drawn on the floor with the aid of sandal paste blended with sindura or saffron and worshipped.

Comments

It is not common as it requires skill to draw Shri Yantra correctly on the floor for the purpose of worship. Hence such a system is slowly dwindled and instead Shri Yantra figure is engraved on metal and it is worshipped.

Shrividya / श्रीविद्या

Shri Vidya is the name of the Mantra of the Goddess Mother.

Comments

Discover Divine Mother in You with the help of spiritual mentor,
Shri Vidya is the experiential knowledge of Shree, the Goddess Tripura Sundari, that lead to liberation, or to the Supreme Truth. Tri is three, pur is worlds, and sundari is beautiful maiden. The most beautiful goddess, who is unrivaled in her beauty in the three worlds, is Tripur sundari. Shodash means sixteen, and Shodashi means “one who is sixteen years old.” All these names are attributes of the same Divine Mother who is the fountainhead of all the beauty and ever young.

As long as the fear of death- because of physical attachment – is present, she is Kali. As Kali she is kundalini in muladhara chakra and when invoked, removes the fear of death and basic insecurity. As long as emotional turmoil exists and freedom from all rules and regulations is sought, she is Tara. As Tara she takes the sadhak across the turmoil of the mental modifications, appearing as high and low tides of emotions, while he is floating in the ocean of samsara. But when these both basic fears are taken care of she is Shodashi, source of inspiration, and Tripura sundari, the fountain head of beauty. As Shodashi she brings transcendental awareness. Siddhas believe that Kali, Tara and Shodashi are three main vidyas of the ten Mahavidyas. From these three principles came nine vidyas, or nine different combinations of the three. The three originally came from which is their essence or compliment. This one is tenth Mahavidya which is the Mul Vidya or Sri Vidya or Brahma vidya. So infact Tripuraa or Tripur sundari herself is Sri Vidya. Sri is Tripura because she is beyond the three gunas. She dwells in the three worlds of manas, buddhi, and chitta and according to Tripurarnava tantra she dwells in three nadis Ida, Pingala and Shushmna. She is the mother of the three gods Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara, so she is Trayi, the unified combination of the three. She is also known as Lalita(Graceful one) and kameshwari (the desire principle of the supreme)

There are three different school of Sri Vidya Sadhana called Samaya Mat, Kaula Mat and Mishra Mat. Samaya Mat is the ancient form of worship. Vedic in origin, it believes in sacrifice and penance. Kaula Mat is the path of heros who can face challenges and remain balanced while enjoying yoga and bhoga(sensual enjoyment). Kaula is an evolved being who dwells in non-dual consciousness and a constant state of awareness. His madya (liquor) is amrita (soma) dripping from Som chakra. To him mansa (meat) is his anger, greed, and attachment. Matsya (fish) is taste, egoity, pride, avarice. Mudra (Chewable) is hope, seeking, anxiety, fear, jealousy, shyness, envy. Maithuna (sexual communion) is the union of Kundalini with Shiva. This is the real Panch Makar Sadhana of a Kaul. Mishra mat, mixed path, combines yoga, tapa and mantra. According to this school the intoxication that comes by knowledge is liquor, the inner silence that comes by sadhana is meat, the stopping of the constant floating in Ganga and Yamuna (Ida and Pingala) is eating the fish and self-knowledge is mudra (Chewable) and union of Siva and Shakti is Maithuna (sexual communion).

Sri yantra is asymmetrical diagram, and the beauty of it is that when you look at it, it appears symmetrical. For the purpose of worship, a Sri Yantra is engraved on copper, silver, and gold plates as a flat line drawing, or sculpted from stone and precious gems(quartz, crystals, etc.). This form of sri yantra looks like a pyramid, and there are many such yantras available from ancient times.

Sri yantra usually represents the body of the goddess Tripurasundari.
Also it is known as yantra of cosmos. In the Bhairavayamal tantra it is clearly said that the yantra of Tripurasundari is of the shape of the cosmos. In Kamakalavilas it is said that Sri Yantra is constructed on the same principles on which the human organism is constructed. Just as the body has nine chakras (psychic centres), so a Sri Yantra has nine chakras(groups), as follows,

  1. Bindu
  2. Trikon – central triangle which contains the bindu
  3. Astar – a group of eight triangles outside the trikon
  4. Antar Dashar – a group of ten inner triangles
  5. Bahir Dashar – a group of ten outer triangles
  6. Chatur Dashar – a group of fourteen triangles
  7. Ashta Dal – a ring of eight lotus petals
  8. Shodashi Dal – a ring of sixteen lotus petals
  9. Bhupar – the square form with four gates

The word chakra in Sri Yantra means a group, not a psychic centres of Kundalini Yoga, but there is a definite relationship between the nine figures of Sri Yantra and the nine psychic centres.

The Kamakalavilas Agama states that it is very necessary to understand the true form of the goddess Tripur Sundari, and the only way to understand it is to understand Sri Yantra, which is symbolic form. Thus it becomes clear that Sri Yantra is –

  • The cosmic form (the diagram of evolution and development of the cosmos).
  • The form of the human organism(the diagram of inner circuit of the body).
  • The form of goddess Tripur Sundari(because the goddess energy, which pervades the entire phenomenal world).
